Description from the seller

Mdina Glass Malta – Pair of Blue Studio Glass Vases – 1970s – Labelled / Signed

A striking and highly decorative pair of Mdina Glass studio glass vases from Malta, dating from the 1970s, executed in a magnificent palette of intense Mediterranean blue, turquoise and aqua, enriched with swirling cream, ochre and amber inclusions. The colour scheme is quintessentially Mediterranean: the brilliant blue recalls the deep waters surrounding the Maltese islands, while the lighter turquoise tones evoke sunlit shallows and clear coastal lagoons. Against this luminous blue ground, the irregular pale and amber trails create an almost marine, organic pattern, reminiscent of seaweed, foam and underwater vegetation.

Both vessels have a beautifully balanced, almost archetypal form: a rounded globular body rises into a short neck and terminates in a broad, strongly flared rim. The profile has a distinctly archaic Mediterranean character, subtly recalling ancient Phoenician and Roman glass vessels while remaining unmistakably modern Studio Glass. The decoration appears suspended within the body of the glass, giving the pieces considerable depth, movement and visual richness. Small bubbles and irregularities are part of the handmade character and contribute to the lively optical effect.

One vase retains its original “MDINA GLASS MALTA” label. The base of the other bears a hand-engraved marking/signature, an attractive additional feature for collectors.

Mdina Glass occupies an important place in the history of modern Maltese decorative glass. Founded in Malta in 1968 by British designers Michael Harris and Eric Dobson, the company became an important Mediterranean centre of the international Studio Glass movement. British artistic influence, together with highly skilled glassmaking, helped establish the distinctive Mdina style: freely formed vessels, rich internal decoration and colours inspired by the Maltese sea, sky and landscape.

This pair beautifully expresses that fusion of British Studio Glass experimentation and Mediterranean visual culture.

The two vases are especially attractive when displayed together: closely related in shape and palette, yet individually decorated, with the spontaneous variations characteristic of handmade studio glass.

Dimensions: approximately 9 × 9 cm each
Weight: approximately 430 g each
Period: 1970s
Origin: Malta
Maker: Mdina Glass

A very decorative and collectable pair for enthusiasts of Mdina Glass, Maltese art glass, 1970s design, British and European Studio Glass and Mediterranean decorative arts.
