Description from the seller

Japan – Small Satsuma-Style Vase with Children – Hand-Painted, Gilt & Moriage – c. 1900–1930

A charming and richly decorated Japanese Satsuma-style miniature vase, probably dating from the late Meiji to Taishō period, circa 1900–1930. Despite its compact size, the vase is exceptionally decorative. It has an elegant baluster form with a slightly flared neck and an ivory-coloured interior showing the fine crackle glaze characteristic of Satsuma-type ceramics.

The exterior is decorated with two large figural reserves showing children or young figures in traditional Japanese dress, painted in red, ochre, gold, pale blue, black and white. The figures are surrounded by elaborate ornamental details, while the dark chocolate-brown ground is enriched with raised decoration, gilding and characteristic white moriage dots along the upper and lower borders. The contrast between the dark ground and the colourful figural scenes gives the piece a particularly strong visual presence. Turquoise accents and traces of gold add further depth and refinement.

The vase is decorated on both principal sides, making it attractive from several viewing angles.
The underside bears a hand-painted workshop or decorator’s mark. The mark has not been conclusively identified, and no attribution to a specific famous Satsuma artist is claimed.
This is a fine decorative example of Japanese export ceramics from the early 20th century, combining hand-painted enamels, raised moriage decoration, gilding and the characteristic crackled glaze associated with Satsuma ware.
