Detailed description of the lot
The lot consists of a precious set of 7 volumes of literature, philosophy, and theater in French, printed between the 18th and 19th centuries.
Volume 1 and volume 2
Jean de La Bruyère, Les Caractères de Théophraste. Edition printed in Amsterdam by Francois Changuion in the year 1759. External conditions are excellent, the period binding is well preserved and the spine features rich decorative friezes. Internal conditions are excellent, the pages are very clean and fresh for the book's age.
Volume 3 and volume 4
Voltaire, complete edition in two volumes, Oeuvres de M. de Voltaire, Romans. Edition printed in Neufchâtel in the year 1770. External conditions are good, the period binding is solid and shows the usual signs of time and age. Internal conditions are very good with well-preserved paper and text perfectly legible.
Volume 5
Chateaubriand, Atala, René, Le Dernier Abencerage, Les Natchez. Edition printed in Paris by Librairie Garnier Frères at the end of the 19th century. External conditions are excellent, the decorative binding is well preserved and the spine is bright. Internal conditions are good with the presence of the classic time stains typical of nineteenth-century volumes.
Volume 6
Theophile Ménard, Ferreol ou Les Passions Vaincues par la Religion. Edition printed in Tours by Ad Mame et Cie in the year 1855. External conditions are excellent, the volume features a splendid publisher's hardcover with rich gold decorative motifs on the spine. Internal conditions are good, the interior is sound albeit with the presence of light foxing.
Volume 7
Pierre Corneille, Chefs d’Oeuvre. Edition printed in Tours by Ad Mame et Cie in the year 1846. External conditions are good, and shows some light signs of wear. Internal conditions are good with stains and foxing more visible and pronounced on some pages but the text remains complete.
