Description from the seller
1800s JHD. Snuff Box / Tabatière (S18chnupftabakdose) – Vermeil (silver-gilt) – Museum quality
Object Description
Exceptionally rare and splendid antique snuff box (tabatière) (Italy, late-18th century). The object is made of solid silver and throughout enhanced with a fine, warm-gilded original vermeil. A true display-piece that immediately catches the eye with its radiant presence and historical allure.
The top of the hinged lid captivates with an elaborate, highly precise relief: the center features an oval-inlaid cartouche with the finest wickerwork Guilloché, framed by gracefully executed Classical Rocaille motifs, foliate tendrils, and a surrounding meander border. The side walls are also adorned with detailed geometric friezes.
On the inner edge of the can-walling are three exceptionally well-preserved historical hallmarks (Poinçons de Charge / Décharge) that attest to the origin and fineness of French antique silver-smithing from the Ancien Régime.
An extremely finely crafted collectible piece of museum quality, in fantastic condition after more than 220 years. The hinged lid closes exactly and flushly – an absolute highlight for any refined antique collection.
