Mandalay-style Burmese marble Buddha statue, hand-carved from a single block of white marble, 30.3 cm high, 20 cm wide, 7.5 cm deep, weighing 3,745 g, depicting the Bhumisparsha mudra, unsigned and in excellent condition, dating from the early 20th century.
Description from the seller
This antique Burmese Buddhist image is a splendid example of religious art from the early twentieth century, crafted in the characteristic Mandalay style with influences from the earlier Ava and Shan periods. The sculpture depicts the Enlightened Buddha in the iconic Bhumisparsha mudra, the seated pose in which the right hand reaches to touch the earth to bear witness to his spiritual victory. The entire object is hand-carved from a single solid block of high-quality white marble, sourced from the historic Sagyin region in Myanmar. The massiveness of the stone is clearly expressed in the substantial weight of 3,745 grams, distributed over the harmonious dimensions of 30.3 centimeters in height, 20 centimeters in width, and a depth of 7.5 centimeters.
What gives this particular piece extra appeal is the well-worn aesthetics and authentic state of preservation. In the deeper folds of the monk’s robe and along the edges of the stylized pedestal, there are still minute traces of the original red lacquer and subtle remnants of gold leaf visible. This indicates that the altar image was originally traditionally gilded. The back and bottom of the figure bear witness to the original artisanal process and reveal rough-cut and sawn marks. Moreover, there is a handwritten inventory number in red pigment on the underside, suggesting an early acquisition into a private collection or estate inventory. The statue is in excellent and fully intact condition, with a beautiful, natural patina of age that underscores its historical value for collectors of Asian art.
