Who is Gracie Morton Pwerle?
She began her artistic career like most artists of Utopia with the introduction of the batik technique in the 70s before turning to painting on canvas in the late 1980s. Gracie essentially draws inspiration from her Dream of Wild Prune, Amwekety. This plant holds great importance for the Aboriginal people of Utopia (the Anmatyerre and the Alyawarre who live in the Eastern Desert). Importance of this fruit rich in vitamin C for feeding oneself but also spiritual importance of this Dream of which Gracie is one of the guardians.
She inherited rights to this Dream from her father and her aunt. She paints it in the manner of other desert artists, like an aerial view.

The background color of the canvas describes the season since the plum tree can bloom with flowers during the winter months but completely changes appearance between the wet season and the dry season. By using very fine dots she creates a three-dimensional appearance.
This style, close in technique to some artists from Utopia such as Kathleen Petyarre, the Purvis family (Kathleen), and especially Anna Petyarre or Abie Loy,... takes on a very personal aspect by emphasizing the very structure of the Dream of Wild Prune (just a few lines fused into the dotty background).
It is this particular style that allowed Gracie to make a name for herself in the late 1990s.

Today her works are very often exhibited in major exhibitions, not only in the large Australian cities but also in Europe or the USA.
