The Holy Bible)
Author / Editor:
King James Version
Place / Publisher / Year:
Oxford 1788
Format / Size:
Duodecimo / Small Octave (23X14)
Collation (Extent):
2 ff., [412] pp., 1 ff., [120] pp., [4] pp.
Description of the Work and Historical Classification:
.Das Alte Testament (The Old Testament)
.Das Neue Testament (The New Testament)
The present work is an English complete Bible (King James Version / Authorized Version) from 1788. It was printed at the famous Clarendon Press in Oxford by the official printers of the university (Printers to the University), W. Jackson and A. Hamilton.
• The Text Type (King James Version): The King James Bible was originally published in 1611 under King James I of England. It is still regarded today as the most influential literary and religious monument of the English-speaking world. The text seen in your photos (especially the historical dedication on image 2: “To the Most High and Mighty Prince James…”) corresponds to the classic form of this translation, orthographically slightly modernized in the 18th century.
Condition:
The outer brown leather- or faux leather cover is modern and was added later to protect the historic book. The binding shows a uniform, undamaged physical appearance without the aging traces typical of the 18th century (no nicks, edge wear, or historical spine embellishments). This is a modern restoration or rebind that stabilizes the historic book block.
• The book block and the paper trimming:
The book block is solid and compact, connected by the modern cover. The edges of the paper display a surrounding, aged reddish cut, slightly worn and darkened, indicating the original age of the paper core.
• The inside pages and the paper:
The interior is in an authentic original condition from 1788. The paper shows the aging browning typical of the period, foxing, and light signs of use (such as minimal creases on the corners of individual pages, e.g., on the title page of the New Testament). The text, however, remains clean, firm, and without structural textual losses or modern handwritten damage.
