Description from the seller

Work by Marie-José Vande Veegaete, born in Ghent in 1917 and died there in 2005.
Drawing on tinted paper, mixed media (charcoal, colored pencils and pastels). This is a page with hand-drawn fashion sketches or costume designs. The drawings show different clothing styles and characters, spread over two rows.
The upper row: Here you see designs for chic winter clothing. The figures wear coats with large collars made of fur or imitation fur, combined with neat skirts and pumps. The hairstyles have a lot of volume. This strongly evokes fashion from the 1960s or 1970s.
The lower row: These designs have a sportier and more modern look. The figures wear slim jackets with prominent colored stripes in a V-shape and pants with wide legs.
Signed on each drawing.
Framed.
Very good condition.
Dimensions
with frame 60.5 x 50.5 cm
without frame 50 x 35 cm

Marie-José Vande Veegaete was born in Ghent in 1917 and died there in 2005. She was active as a painter, draftsman, pastellist and sometimes even as a sculptor. She was the daughter of the well-known artist Julien Van De Veegaete (1886 – 1960).
She studied at the Academy in Ghent and won there the ‘Paul de Vigne Prize’, as well as the ‘First Prize for Sculpture’. She would have left school when she was fourteen. After that she drew her whole life.
In 1956 she was admitted to the Caritas Psychiatric Center in Melle. The reason for this was the traumatic effects of sexual violence endured during a train journey. She remained there for the rest of her life and died there as well.
