Toleware magazine rack from France, made of painted steel, dating to 1955–1965.
Description from the seller
Very nice and atmospheric vintage magazine rack, made in Florentine / Toleware style, dating from the late 1950s / early 1960s.
This magazine rack (newspaper rack) is completely made of metal and finished in a stylish broken white / cream color and black lacquer. On the side panels roses are painted with their Latin name (see photos). This kind of interior objects is also called Toleware: metal objects, such as magazine racks, but also trays, or boxes, made of metal that were then painted. Late 1950s and early 1960s was an interior trend. You could call the style Hollywood Regency or Shabby Chic or classic-modern.
This rack weighs about 2kg. The height is 42cm, the width is 32cm and the depth 23.5cm. The roses appear to be painted on loose metal plates, which were later attached to the rack.
This magazine rack still has at the bottom the original shop sticker from the art dealership where it was bought: Arn. vd Heijden, kunsthandel Eindhoven (see photos). This is Arnold M.H. van der Heijden (photographer and art dealer). This renowned art dealership flourished in the postwar reconstruction period on Rechtestraat in Eindhoven. The shop existed until somewhere in the second half of the 1960s. For collectors, this sticker offers a nice and tangible piece of (Dutch) shop history.
The magazine rack is carefully packed and insured for shipping.
