Circle of Hermanus Koekkoek Sr., oil on panel, 19th‑century Dutch river landscape with sailing vessels, 39 × 45 cm, signed, in a gilt frame.
Description from the seller
Circle of Hermanus Koekkoek Sr. (1815–1882)
Dutch river landscape with sailing vessels
Oil on panel, 19th century
An atmospheric Dutch Romantic river landscape depicting sailing vessels and small rowing boats on calm water beneath an expansive evening sky. On the left bank, figures and modest rural buildings enliven the composition, while warm light and reflections lend the scene a tranquil character.
The painting is executed in oil on panel and measures approximately 39 × 45 cm, excluding the frame. It bears a signature lower left reading “H. Koekkoek f.”. The signature appears to lie beneath the varnish layer, although its age and authenticity have not been established through technical examination.
The subject and atmospheric treatment show affinities with the river and marine paintings of Hermanus Koekkoek Sr. (1815–1882). However, both the execution and the form of the signature differ from his documented works. These differences prevent a confident attribution to the artist himself.
The painting is therefore conservatively offered as Circle of Hermanus Koekkoek Sr., indicating a work by an unidentified artist working in a closely related artistic tradition. This designation does not establish a direct personal or workshop connection with Koekkoek. The signature is recorded as present and is not presented as authenticated.
The work has not currently been traced in published literature or a documented catalogue of the artist’s oeuvre. Further specialist and technical research may help clarify its authorship.
Presented in a decorative gilt frame. Age-related surface wear, craquelure and minor imperfections are visible. Please study the photographs carefully, as these form an important part of the condition description.
