Kaws (1974) - Small Lie

KAWS (b. 1974) Small Lie (Grey) 2017
Painted cast vinyl, produced by Medicom Toy Stamped on the underside ‘KAWS..17 SMALL LIE MEDICOM TOY CHINA’ 27.5 × 12.2 × 12.9 cm (10⅞ × 4¾ × 5⅛ in.)
Small Lie belongs to KAWS’s Companion series and reworks the slumped, head-bowed pose of a child caught in a fib. The long nose points to Pinocchio; the gloves, overall shorts and boots recall the cartoon language that runs through the artist’s work. The figure was first shown as a large African hardwood sculpture in 2013, and a monumental outdoor version appeared at Yorkshire Sculpture Park in 2016. Medicom Toy released this vinyl edition the following year in grey, brown and black.
