Brass decorative vase and vintage umbrella stand from the 1940s–1950s, made in India, in good used condition with age-related marks; dimensions 38 cm wide, 38 cm deep, 59 cm high, weight 5 kg.
Description from the seller
a large decorative vase and vintage umbrella stand, a handcrafted brass artifact made entirely of brass, characterized by a complex combination of traditional metalworking techniques.
1. Finish and Handicraft Techniques
• Geometric scale decoration (repoussé): The neck of the vase is embellished with a refined motif of overlapping bands with raised, fish-scale or wave-shaped incisions. This geometric texture creates a strong visual separation from the fluid lines of the rest of the object.
• Hammered Work (Bocciardatura): Both the wide flared rim and the lower bulging belly are entirely covered by dense, uniform hammering done by hand. This technique makes the metal surface not smooth but facet-like, producing a dynamic play of golden reflections and light contrasts.
2. Interior and Manufacturing Method
• Welding at the base: Looking inside the vase, one clearly notices the dark circular seam that fixes the base to the body. The presence of this trace and the irregularities of the interior finish attest that the object was not industrially stamped by machine, but is the result of an artisanal assembly and welding of brass sheets.
• Patina of time: The interior shows the classic signs of natural metal oxidation and aging of brass, confirming the authenticity and vintage age of the object.
3. Anatomy of the Object
• Lip and opening: Flared in a theatrical trumpet shape with wavy edges.
• Body (Belly): A robust line in the form of a classic amphora, designed for both static balance and aesthetics.
• Handles: Two large symmetrical "C"-shaped handles, riveted or welded to the sides to facilitate movement.
