Description from the seller
Title
A Pair of Antique Japanese Blue and White Octagonal Saucer Dishes – Hizen no Kuni, Taisei Sei (肥前国 大成製) – Late Edo / Early Meiji Period, ca. 1850–1880
Description
A beautiful, matching pair of mid-to-late 19th-century Japanese porcelain octagonal small saucer dishes/petite bowls, crafted in the historic Hizen province (Arita region), Japan.
The interior of the dishes features a striking, hand-painted underglaze blue (sometsuke) decoration. The design showcases an elegant layout divided into panels featuring traditional figures interspaced with rich floral panels, centering around a central floral medallion. This specific composition is a masterful Japanese artistic reinterpretation of classical Chinese Kraak porcelain, highly sought after in the European export market during the late Edo and early Meiji eras.
The reverse side of both dishes displays a four-panel border with floral sprigs and features an authentic, hand-painted underglaze blue six-character mark arranged in two columns: 「肥前国 大成製」 (Hizen no Kuni, Taisei Sei), which translates to "Made by Taisei in the Hizen Province". This explicit geographical marking is highly characteristic of quality porcelain workshops operating during the transition from the Edo to the Meiji period.
