Description from the seller
Daniël Crul (1928–2003) was a Belgian art glassmaker, painting restorer, and heraldist from Bruges. He specialized in stained-glass windows: windows with painted glass that are fired in a kiln and then set in lead.
He was born in Bruges on 24 April 1928. He studied at the Bruges Academy of Fine Arts and at the Sint-Lucas Higher Institute in Ghent. He built up his own workshop and gained fame with both new stained glass and restoration work.
His main works
1. The monumental stained-glass window in the old courthouse of Kortrijk
In 1957 Daniël Crul won a provincial competition for a large stained-glass window. The artwork shows a stylized judge with a sword and scales, against a background of flames. His brother Antoine helped with the design and execution.
2. Stained-glass windows in churches and chapels
Among his significant works are windows in the cloister chapel of the Neuro-Psychiatric Clinic in Pittem, the chapel of the Sint-Jozef School in Sint-Michiels, and the monastery church of the Capuchin friars in Bruges.
3. Historical and heraldic art
He also created glass artworks with historical and heraldic subjects, including a depiction of the houses of Burgundy and Austria from 1965. In addition, he restored old paintings.
Recognition and family
* 1993: he received the cultural prize Golden Phoenix.
* 6 September 2003: he passed away.
* His younger brother Antoine Crul became a well-known ceramicist.
* His son Leo Crul followed in his footsteps as a glazier and restorer.
