Description from the seller
Francisco Echauz Buisán (Madrid, 1927–2011)
Spanish Urban Landscape
Oil on canvas
Interesting oil on canvas by the Spanish painter Francisco Echauz Buisán (Madrid, 1927–2011), representing a luminous view of a Spanish town, presided over by a religious building and a group of traditional houses.
The composition is articulated through a free and expressive brushstroke, with special attention to architecture and to the effects produced by light. The whites of the facades contrast with the ochers and earth tones of the buildings and with the bluish tones of the sky, while small elements such as human figures and the red vehicle provide scale, depth, and dynamism to the scene.
Echauz was an artist with solid training. He studied at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, the Escuela Nacional de Artes Gráficas and the Instituto de Investigaciones y Experiencias Cinematográficas. Between 1955 and 1959 he was a fellow at the Academia Española de Bellas Artes in Rome and subsequently obtained by competition, in 1960, a chair at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. He also received a grant from the Fundación Juan March in 1961–1962. radelrey
His artistic career was especially rich and evolved through different languages. His production in the fifties was initially related to surrealism, evolving later toward expressionism. During the seventies he also investigated the material possibilities of painting and maintained contacts with informalist approaches, though without completely abandoning the presence of recognizable elements from reality and nature. TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes
He held solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows both in Spain and abroad. The Juan March Foundation documentation records exhibitions in Madrid, Rome and Zaragoza, as well as participations in Italy during his years as a fellow. Even at the beginning of the 1960s, works of his were documented in the then Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Madrid and in collections in Spain, Italy, France, Denmark, Sweden and the United States. Recursos March
His work is also represented in Spanish institutional collections; among them, the Museo de Pontevedra preserves a work by Echauz titled El corredor, and recent official documentation records other paintings of his in public collections. Finca Mouriscade
In the present painting, Echauz develops a more directly figurative and landscape-oriented approach, building the scene with a visible brushstroke and a personal interpretation of color and light. The interest in architectural forms, whitewashed surfaces and luminosity places the work within the renewal of Spanish figurative painting in the second half of the 20th century.
The work is signed “Echauz” in the lower left corner.
