Description
Rare work of scholastic philosophy in Latin, published in Paris in 1694. This original edition brings together the two parts announced on the title page: logic and physics.
Its full title is Philosophus in utramque partem, sive selectae et limatae difficultates in utramque partem, cum responsionibus, ad usum scholae, circa celebres universae philosophiae controversias. One can translate it as: “The philosopher of both sides, or the selected and examined difficulties on both sides, with their responses, for the use of schools, on the famous controversies of philosophy.”
The work is the product of Laurent Duhan, licentiate in theology, fellow of the Sorbonne and professor of philosophy at the Academy of Paris. He presents various controversies by presenting the opposing arguments, according to a method intended for teaching and philosophical discussion.
Copy printed in Paris by the widow of Claude Thiboust and Pierre Esclassan, with royal privilege. The title page bears the date M. DC. XCIV (1694). Bibliographic catalogs list this Paris edition of 1694 as the first edition of the work.
The volume measures about 16 × 9 cm. The printed pagination goes up to 462; the copy also includes preliminary pages and the errata for the two parts. The presence of the final page bearing Finis is visible in the photographs.
Condition
Old leather binding, heavily rubbed and worn, with signs of age and damage to corners, edges and hinges. Old paper, yellowed and stained in places, notably in the margins. Some handwritten annotations are visible on the last pages. The condition should be assessed from the photographs; a complete check of the gatherings is advised.
A small-format work but with a fine presence, of interest to collectors of ancient philosophy, schoolbooks and 17th-century Paris editions.
