Alfred de Musset - Oeuvres de Alfred de Musset - 1878

Alfred de Musset — Works, illustrated by Henri Pille

Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, illustrated edition dated 1878 — 10 volumes

Set of ten volumes devoted to the works of Alfred de Musset, major French Romantic poet and playwright. The edition is illustrated by Henri Pille; the etchings are engraved by Louis Monziès, as indicated by the photographed title page.

The collection notably includes Poetry, The Comedies and Proverbs, The Confession of a Child of the Century, The Novellas, The Tales and Short Stories, The Posthumous Works and the Mixtures of Literature and Criticism. The titles visible on the spines confirm the diversity of texts gathered in the series.

Characteristics: ten volumes; about 2,500 pages in total; format 19 × 12 cm; uniform half-leather binding with marbled boards and spines decorated with motifs and gilt titles. The date 1878 appears on the title engraved on one of the volumes. This ten-volume series corresponds to the works; the biography of Paul de Musset can be a complementary volume in some collections.

Condition: old set showing signs of use and aging. The photographs show foxing and yellowing of the paper, as well as rubbing on the bindings. The volumes remain uniform in appearance. Please refer to the photos, which are an integral part of the description.

A beautiful 19th-century literary set, both interesting for reading and decorative on a library shelf. The presence and condition of the engravings should be checked volume by volume.
