Ghau, a Tibetan portable reliquary or amulet box, dating to the late 20th century, made of wood with brass/bronze gilt plates and a leather strap, with an overall length of 68 cm and the Ghau itself measuring 13.6 x 12.5 x 2.3 cm and weighing 419 g.
Description from the seller
The Ghau (also known as Gao or Ga'u) is a portable reliquary or amulet box typical of Tibetan Buddhist tradition. It is worn cross-body with a strap or cord of leather/fabric by pilgrims and devotees during travel or daily practices. The Ghau functions as a true portable altar. The wearer seeks spiritual protection against negative energies, obstacles, and the dangers of the journey. In the center of the brass/bronze plaque there is a depiction of a deity or a meditating Buddha (often associated with protective or compassionate figures, such as Chenrezig, Mahakala, or Zambala depending on the iconography) seated on a lotus throne. Around the central figure are applied small decorative metal plaques (10) embossed. In Tibetan tradition, these plaques usually reproduce the Eight Auspicious Symbols (Ashtamangala), which include the endless knot, the lotus flower, the treasure vase, and the wheel of Dharma, each bringing specific blessings of prosperity, wisdom, and harmony. On the back, carved into the wood, is the OM symbol written in Tibetan. Including the full leather strap, it measures 68 cm; only the Ghau itself is 13.6x12.5x2.3 cm and weighs 419 g. Good condition. Insured shipping with professional packaging.
