Description from the seller

Elegant oil portrait of a woman on canvas, 19th-century Spanish school, executed following the portrait models of Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz (1815-1894), one of the great masters of Spanish Romantic portraiture.

The composition depicts a half-length lady, posed three-quarters, serenely meeting the viewer's gaze. The sitter wears a sober dark outfit, enriched by a wide white lace collar and an ornamental brooch. The hair is carefully gathered into an elaborate tall hairstyle, in keeping with the fashion of the second half of the 19th century.

The figure stands out against a neutral, softly nuanced background designed to focus attention on the face, the hairstyle, and the details of the clothing. The absence of accessory elements reinforces the intimate and representative character of the image.

The work stands out for the careful modeling of the features, the restrained expression of the sitter, and the balance between the precision of drawing and the softness of tonal transitions. The face is modeled with warm flesh tones and delicate gradations of light, while the whites of the lace introduce a luminous contrast against the sobriety of the dress.

From a stylistic point of view, the painting clearly relates to the tradition of 19th-century Spanish Romantic and bourgeois portraiture, showing affinities with Federico de Madrazo’s work. These similarities can be seen in the austere composition, the moderate idealization of the model, the refinement of the attire, the attention given to textile qualities, and the psychological characterization of the sitter.

The work presents itself as a follower of Federico de Madrazo or in the manner of Federico de Madrazo, without direct attribution to the master.

In the lower left corner there appears a signature or inscription formed by the initials “F. de M.” This inscription was uncovered after removing the previous oval frame, which partially concealed that area of the painting. Nevertheless, there is no documentation or technical study available to confirm its authenticity, so the signature could be old, later, or apocryphal and does not by itself constitute attribution to Federico de Madrazo.

About Federico de Madrazo

Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz was born in Rome in 1815 and died in Madrid in 1894. He was the son of the neoclassical painter José de Madrazo and belonged to one of the most influential artistic families in 19th-century Spain.

He trained at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and completed his education in Paris, where he came into contact with Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and the main currents of European academicism and romanticism.

He achieved great prestige as a portraitist of the aristocracy, the high bourgeoisie, the royal family, and the most prominent personalities of his time. His portraits are characterized by the elegance of the drawing, the precision in representing fabrics and jewelry, the refinement of flesh tones, and meticulous psychological characterization.

He was director of the Museo del Prado and of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, playing a fundamental role in 19th-century Spanish artistic life. His style exerted a deep influence on several generations of painters and gave rise to numerous followers, pupils, and imitators.

Condition

The work shows signs typical of its age, including general wear, surface dirt, craquelure, rubbing, small losses of pictorial material, and possible old restorations.

There is an intervention in the clothing area, noticeable in the photographs. This intervention could correspond to restoration, pictorial reintegration, or old repair. It is recommended to carefully examine the images, which are an essential part of the description and allow assessing the actual conservation state.

The work was previously mounted in an oval frame, which concealed part of the margins of the composition and the area where the signature is located.

The current frame is modern and has been recently installed, chosen for its aesthetic suitability to the character and era of the work. Although it is newly placed, it is included as a gift, with no commercial value, and its condition will not be a basis for any claim.

The work will be carefully packed to ensure proper protection during transport.

Customs duties, tariffs, import taxes, processing fees, and any other charges required in the destination country shall be the buyer’s sole responsibility.
