Oliver Goldsmith (1728–1774) was one of the most celebrated and versatile Irish writers, poets, and essayists of the 18th century. Although today he is remembered mainly in the literary world for the novel The Vicar of Wakefield and for the theatrical comedy The Play She Humiliates Herself to Win, his work with the greatest commercial success was precisely the encyclopedia "A History of the Earth, and Animated Nature".
Engraver: (J. Bishop): He was a skilled British engraver and etcher active in the 19th century. He worked extensively for the publishing house Blackie & Son, specializing in translating onto metal plates the detailed naturalist drawings, imprinting that extremely fine texture typical of bird feathers and reptile scales that can be seen in the prints.
Joseph Brown, a celebrated and esteemed British engraver active in London during the 19th century.
