Description from the seller
Adoration of the Magi
This delightful painting depicting the Adoration of the Magi is surely the work of the workshop of Jacopo da Ponte, called Il Bassano (Bassano del Grappa, c. 1515 – Bassano del Grappa, 13 February 1592).
Jacopo's work, whose themes appeared alternative to the dominant art of the Serenissima, soon gained wide acclaim, even commercially, such that evangelical or biblical subjects, set in the foothill landscapes of the Bassano area, became highly sought after, especially among the new rising classes.
Jacopo established in his workshop a true “image industry” to satisfy the growing demand for works: his sons Francesco (1549-1592), Giambattista (1553-1613), Leandro (1557-1622) and Gerolamo (1566-1621) devoted themselves to producing large quantities of subjects, including serial ones, both sacred and mythological.
Francesco, the most gifted of Jacopo's sons, opened a branch in Venice, where Bassano art was already very well known and appreciated. However Jacopo never wished to leave his homeland.
The last member of the family was a woman, Chiaretta, daughter of the third-born Giambattista, wife of the Asiago painter Antonio Scajaro, pupil of her uncle, Gerolamo Bassano, the youngest of Jacopo's sons. With the death of Giacomo and Carlo Scajaro, sons of Chiaretta and great-grandsons of the Patriarch, the dynasty became extinct in 1661 and the activity ceased definitively.
Of notable painterly quality, our painting also shows a high level of executive refinement, such as to suggest the paternity of one of the most artistically gifted sons, perhaps Francesco,
in a conservational state almost perfectly preserved; dimensions: 55 cm by 42.5 cm and, in the frame, 65.5 cm by 52 cm.
