AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Ancient painting from the 17th century depicting the Nativity of the Virgin
The Genoese school of painting in the seventeenth century was a vibrant and innovative artistic movement, characterized by an intense Baroque, influenced by Caravaggism, Flemish naturalism (thanks to the presence of Rubens and Van Dyck) and intense mysticism. Protagonists of the Baroque renewal and of devotional and decorative painting, the Genoese painters distinguished themselves for the bold use of color, chiaroscuro and a strong emotional charge.
Genoa, thanks to its open port, became a crossroads of artistic exchanges, absorbing European novelties and developing an autonomous style, capable of uniting classicism with an innovative academism.
Among the prominent figures stand out Bernardo Strozzi (known for his textural and warm canvases), Domenico Piola (a key figure of the second half of the seventeenth century, famous for fresco decorations), and Giovanni Battista Gaulli, called Il Baciccio.
The painting ranged from intense portraits to large altarpieces, up to sophisticated still lifes, often in collaboration among different masters.
The painting measures 87 cm by 99 cm.
