AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Triptych of large parade plates in tin-glazed earthenware (majolica) – Rouen Style – France, late 19th century (3)

Lot composed of three large display-ready flat plates (for exhibition) in polychrome tin-glazed earthenware (faïence), dating to the second half of the 19th century (circa 1870-1900).

The articles are characterized by a central decorative motif with a musical theme (faïence musicale). Each plate bears at the center a musical score with notes and text in French, surmounted by the indication of the musical tempo:
Aria - Gravement ("La chaîne de l'Hymen...")
Aria - Allegro ("Dans nos hameaux j'entends toujours blâmer...")
Aria ("Pour passer doucement ma vie...")
The waved contoured rim is entirely decorated with polychrome reserve floral motifs, sprigs, arabesques and stylized birds in the cobalt blue, iron red, ochre yellow and ramina green tones, echoing the famous ornamental repertoire of Rouen faience from the 18th century.
The pieces are made entirely by hand in terms of clay shaping, base glaze and application of the polychromy. The foundation of the design (score, texts and geometric outlines of the rim) was laid out using transferware printing, then completely retraced, filled and finished by hand with ceramic colors before firing.
The back presents a uniform white glaze, devoid of marks, and bears on the foot the characteristic two period-through holes for wall suspension.
The manufacture is attributed to the Desvres area (e.g., Fourmaintraux) or to qualified workshops in northern France specializing in period historicism.
Excellent state of conservation. The three plates are strictly intact: they show no chipping, nibbling, restorations or glaze loss. Glassy, pristine surface with no utensil wear.

Dimensions
: Diameter: 27 cm each
Packing will be carried out with the utmost care (polystyrene, bubble wrap and double carton) to guarantee integrity during tracked shipment.
