Description from the seller
Very Rare Collection of 26 General Staff Maps (military topographic maps) of Belgium, topogravured and printed at the Military Cartographic Institute in 1912, in a format of 44.5 cm x 52 cm, whose particular feature is that they are linen-backed (glued onto a linen section so they can be folded and carried on the field without tearing) -
They are very detailed maps, sometimes called "little boards" at 1/40,000, drawn by J. Collet -
The "linen" process was reserved for officers and for intensive field use. It now gives these documents a high preservation value - They date from a pivotal period, just before World War I. Important in view of the pre-war era, they show the Belgian landscape in its original form (railways, canals, former forts of Antwerp, Liège and Namur) as it existed before the great destructions of 1914-1918 - This material is highly sought after by local historians, fortification enthusiasts and genealogists - The Maps are in Excellent condition, with no tears, nor any stains - Presented in an original case that is very worn and used (see photos) -
List of Maps: I. Assembly table of the Belgium map at 1:100,000; smaller format (33 x 22 cm) dated 1908 - II: Bruges - III. Eecloo - IV. Antwerp - V. Turnhout - VI. Maeseyck - VII. Furnes - VIII. Courtrai - IX. Ghent - X. Brussels - XI. Hasselt - XII. Tongres - XIII. Tournai - XIV. Mons - XV. Charleroi - XVI. Namur - XVII. Liège - XVIII. Roisin - XIX. Thuin - XX. Dinant - XXI. Laroche - XXII. Cul-des-Sarts - XXIII. Bouillon - XXIV. Arlon - XXV. Villers-devant-Orval - XXVI. Virton -
