Rare and sought-after monumental edition, magnificently illustrated, of the famous Mémorial de Sainte-Hélène, essential account of Napoléon Bonaparte’s life and conversations during his exile. This edition also includes the reports of O'Meara and Antommarchi, as well as the historical account of the return of the Emperor’s remains to Paris in 1840.
Binding:
Sovereign and decorative publisher’s binding of the period. Boards finely stamped in blind and gold with geometric decorations, vegetal motifs, and the crowned N monogram. Richly ornamented spines with the imperial eagle and gold titles. Edges of the pages decorated/gilded.
Illustrations:
Richly illustrated both in the text and beyond, with numerous engravings by the era’s leading artists, depicting portraits, historical scenes, and ambient vignettes.
Condition:
Binding: Generally good condition for the age; slight signs of wear to the spine, margins, and headcaps, binding solid and hinges well preserved.
Interior: Pages firmly bound. Widespread foxing and browning due to aging, entirely normal and typical for the type of paper used by this publisher in that period. Engravings clearly defined.
