Description from the seller

Oil on canvas
“Symbolist, twilight landscape with mystical figures”
Attributed to Gabriel von Max
Signed lower left: G Max
Dimensions: 88x108; 72x88 outside the frame
Good condition.
The work has recently undergone a conservation-restoration intervention and professional cleaning carried out by an accredited restoration studio. This restoration removed varnishes yellowed by time, restoring the original chromatic brilliance and the depth of chiaroscuro. The restoration performed confirmed the absolute integrity and contemporaneity of the signature "G. Max" at the lower left, excluding overpainting or alterations of the signature, which is structurally integrated into the original pictorial layer.
The work depicts a scene imbued with mysticism and spirituality, typical of the lyrical and esoteric language of the artist. At twilight, under a sky dominated by dense clouds and a soft, slanting sunlight, some figures wrapped in white tunics (reminiscent of monks or paleochristian pilgrims) inhabit the space. On the right rises an ancient stone hermitage with a staircase, topped by a lit lantern and a small votive cross. The composition is masterfully built on the contrast between the earthy, dark tones of the landscape and the ethereal whiteness of the figures’ garments, illuminated by a light almost supernatural.
Provenance: Private collection, Sicily
The gilded wooden frame, contemporaneous, gold leaf, ornate on the inner edge.
Tracked insured shipping with courier
The frame is offered as a courtesy
Shipping, therefore, on request and at the buyer’s expense
