Jules Verne's Les enfants du capitaine Grant, an illustrated edition in French, circa 1880, 400 pages, 29 cm by 19 cm, red half-leather binding with gilt decoration and numerous wood engravings after Édouard Riou.
Description from the seller
VERNE, Jules
The Children of Captain Grant
Paris, J. Hetzel et Cie. No date, circa 1880.
A copy in octavo format, half red morocco binding from the period, with a spine featuring raised bands ornamented with gilt tooling, fleurons, and title pieces. The work contains superb marbled endpapers and numerous engravings after drawings by Édouard Riou.
This famous adventure novel by Jules Verne, originally published in the Voyages Extraordinaires collection, tells of the expedition led by Lord and Lady Glenarvan aboard the yacht Duncan to find Captain Grant, whose ship was wrecked.
The volume is richly illustrated with wood engravings inserted in the text, characteristic of the Romantic editions from the Hetzel house.
Robust half-leather binding with some signs of use on the headcaps and corners, but the spine remains very sound and the gilding is clearly visible. Clean marbled endpapers, the body of the book well bound with only a few rare stains or scattered foxing, complete with its illustrations.
Beautiful copy.
