Description from the seller
Three-column pewter hourglass, with decoration inspired by the Spanish 8 reales coin of Charles IV, 1791
Decorative three-column hourglass, made in pewter-like metal, with a patinated finish in a dark gray/silver tone. It features a structure of three turned supports and heavily ornate, joined to a circular base and a circular cover with significant relief.
The hourglass presents two circular bases with clearly differentiated designs. The upper base, appearing solid, is decorated with a numismatic relief motif inspired by a Spanish 8 reales from 1791, including a peripheral inscription, cross, value and date. The lower base presents an independent historicist composition, with abundant relief decoration of an allegorical character and elements related to navigation and history, surrounded by a stepped circular edge. The difference between the two bases seems deliberate and constitutes one of the piece’s distinctive features.
