Item Description
Rare and charming edition called “Cazin” (collectible pocket format) of Goethe's masterpiece, printed in Paris in 1786.
Translated by Abbé Aubry, this epistolary novel marked the birth of European Romanticism and the Sturm und Drang movement. Editions published by Hubert Cazin are particularly sought after by collectors for the finesse of their production and their elegant miniature format.

• Binding: Full contemporary cuir couro (brown marmoreated calf). Smooth spine richly ornamented with compartments, rosettes and gilt geometric motifs. Gilt title-piece. Gilt tooling on the edges.
• Exterior condition: Binding well preserved and sound. The leather shows a beautiful period patina with slight signs of wear at the headbands and boards, not serious. Joints solid.
• Interior condition: Interior fresh despite a few foxings and sporadic browning entirely normal for 18th-century paper. Original fabric bookmark preserved. Old manuscript ownership signature ("Lise Louvet") on the title page, adding historical charm to the copy.
• Illustration: Complete with its superb copper-engraved frontispiece facing the title, depicting the final dramatic scene of the novel.
A very fine copy, representative of the golden age of small bibliophile editions of the 18th century.
