Description from the seller
Madonna Assunta with Angels
Southern Italian school, 18th century
Oil on canvas
A religious subject painting depicting the Virgin Assunta, shown at the center of the composition, seated on the clouds and wrapped in a broad blue mantle over a red robe. The Madonna, with arms open and her gaze turned upward, is surrounded by a halo of light and accompanied by angels and cherubs.
In the lower part of the scene appears an angelic figure holding the globe, an element that emphasizes the triumphant and celestial character of the depiction. At the Virgin’s feet, a putto carries small flowers, while in the lower left background a landscape with a fortified village is visible, a feature of iconographic interest that could allow further insights into the work’s provenance or the specific devotion for which it was intended.
The composition, set in an ascensional movement and characterized by the strong contrast between the red of the robe and the blue-green of the mantle, appears to be linked to the devotional painting tradition of southern Italy in the Baroque era. Painting restored.
