Description from the seller
Golden-Bronze Sculpture Depicting a Romantic Poetess - Female Figure with Marble Base, 19th Century Marble.
DESCRIPTION:
A cast and mercury-gilded bronze sculpture from the 19th century (Louis-Philippe era, circa 1830-1845), portraying a draped female figure with a laurel wreath in her hair, identifiable as a poetess or muse, resting against a modanated pedestal. The figurative element originally formed the upper pediment of a French mantel clock (pendule de cheminée); it was subsequently affixed to a rectangular veined red marble base for use as an autonomous sculpture. The casting features chased work on the drapery, facial features, and hairstyle. Unsigned, of French manufacture.
CONDITIONS:
The object is in generally good condition. The mercury gilding is preserved with a natural patina and shows widespread dark pinpoint oxidation, small surface scratches, and attenuation of the gilding at the most prominent and handled areas (face, arms, and mouldings of the pillar). On the top surface of the faux side bronze base there is the original slot for housing accessories now absent. The red veined marble base is intact, without chips or structural breaks.
MEASUREMENTS:
Total dimensions: 19.5 x 12.3 x 8.3 cm.
NOTES:
During the reign of Louis-Philippe (1830-1848), Parisian production of fireplace clocks favored historicist and literary Romantic themes, celebrating figures of writers, poets, muses, and classical allegorical subjects. The reworking of these decorative bronzes by mounting them on noble marble bases (such as griotte marble or red marble from France) is a well-documented antiquarian practice to preserve and valorize autonomous clock decorations.
