Portrait of an older woman, drawn in chalk on toned paper, signed, in good condition, original edition from the Czech Republic, image size 30 cm by 28 cm, framed in a dark marbleised wood frame with a total size of 52 cm by 47 cm.
Description from the seller
This expressive portrait of an older woman is executed in pastel or coloured chalk on tinted paper. It captivates with its lively, characterful facial expression and the fine detail work in the attire.
Artwork analysis & details
Subject: Depicted is an older woman in profile, resting supportively her hand on her cheek. She wears an elaborately patterned, yellow-red dyed headscarf with geometric motifs as well as a white cloth under the chin, which strongly points to an Eastern European, Balkan, or Alpine folk costume.
Technique: The chalk was used with great sensitivity. While the face, with delicate flesh tones, wrinkles, and shadows, is realistically worked, the clothing and background are dynamically sketched with freer hatching chalk strokes.
Signature: At the bottom right there is a clear signature in dark chalk.
The name would appear to fit the Eastern European/Slavic influence of the depicted costume.
Presentation: The drawing is framed by a wide mat and set in a dark, marbled wooden frame, which nicely highlights the warm colors of the headscarf.
Dimensions incl. frame: 52 cm x 47 cm
The frame is included as a complimentary addition.
