Biography of the painter:
Patxi Saralegui (Bilbao, 1928 – 2002) was a Basque painter devoted mainly to figurative painting, and especially noted for his still lifes.
Throughout his career he developed a traditional-rooted painting, showing particular interest in everyday objects, fruits, flowers, ceramics, and various elements arranged in careful interior compositions. His works are characterized by the study of light, volume, and textures, as well as by a generally warm and harmonious palette.
He primarily worked in oil painting, with an expressive and visible brushstroke that added body and depth to his compositions. His still lifes maintain the influence of the Spanish tradition of the genre, though treated with a freer execution typical of mid- to late-20th-century figurative painting.
Saralegui found in the still life a medium especially suited to exploring the contrasts of light and shadow and the chromatic richness of simple objects. His known output is mainly linked to private collections.
