Description from the seller
Excellent highly detailed bronze sculpture of a seated man / worker on a bench
Features & Specifications:
Artist: Jan Haas (1941-2018)
Depiction: Seated man / worker in a suit with a cap beside him on a bench
Material: Solid bronze with a dark brown to warm patina finish
Dating: Second half of the 20th century (circa 1980-1990)
Signature: monogrammed / stamped in the bronze on the plinth (JH / foundry mark)
Dimensions: 14.5 cm high x 10 cm wide x 12 cm deep
Weight: 1120 grams (1.12 kg)
Condition: In excellent, original condition with a lovely authentic patina layer.
The sculpture depicts a contemplative seated man in a suit, who has laid his cap (skipper’s cap / worker’s cap) next to him on the bench. Jan Haas was known for his powerful, figurative style and his fondness for portraying the ‘ordinary person’ — such as laborers, rural workers, dockers, fishing figures and everyday citizens at rest. The work exudes characteristic calm, melancholy and human dignity.
About the artist (Jan Haas 1941–2018):
Jan Harm Cornelis (Jan) Haas was a leading Dutch sculptor, painter and graphic artist. He lived and worked much of his life in Vlissingen and was a prominent member of the Zeeuwse Kunstkring. Haas is known for his expressive modeling technique with rough, angular bronze forms.
His work is in numerous museum and private collections, and he created several well-known monumental works in public spaces (such as the Watersnoodmonument 'Houen jongens' in Colijnsplaat and the Laborers in Sint Anna ter Muiden).
Auction history & Provenance:
A comparable example of this seated figure by Jan Haas was previously auctioned at the renowned Van Spengen Auction House (on 28 February 2023 under the lot “Jan Haas (1941-2018) bronze sculpture with depiction of a seated man”). This makes it a sought-after and valued collectible among enthusiasts of modern Dutch and Zeelandic sculpture.
Shipping:
It is packed very carefully with bubble wrap, foam and cardboard and sent by registered insured mail
