Testa di San Giovanni Battista nel bacile, a XVII century oil on canvas painting in Lombard Baroque style from Italy, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli called the Morazzone (1573–1626) – Head of John the Baptist in the Basin
17th century
Oil on canvas
Important painting from the Lombard school of the Seicento depicting the Head of John the Baptist beheaded, laid in a basin, a subject particularly significant in Lombard painting between the late Cinquecento and the early Seicento.
The work is attributed to Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli called the Morazzone (1573–1626) and reprises a composition tied to the master’s iconographic tradition.
The subject finds an important reference in Morazzone’s documented works: the Fondazione Zeri records a Head of John the Baptist attributed to Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli, oil on canvas, with a historically localized version at the Church of San Bartolomeo in Gerola Alta. Fondazione Zeri Catalog
Another work preserved in the collections of Castello Sforzesco in Milan, also attributed to Morazzone, depicts the same subject and is dated circa 1600–1624. Lombardy Beniculturali
The composition is characterized by strong chiaroscuro, with the Baptist’s face emerging from the depth of the dark background and the luminous surface of the basin. The intense rendering of the flesh tones, hair, and the dish’s details enhances the dramatic and devotional character of the image.
The painting underwent restoration and relining in 1986.
The work presents an old painting surface with widespread craquelure and patina, consistent with the indicated chronology, as well as the normal signs of time.
