Description from the seller
Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino (1591–1666)
Saint Mary of Egypt (Mary Magdalene, Memento Mori)
1630–1660
Oil on canvas
An interesting antique painting depicting Saint Mary of Egypt, portrayed in a penitential attitude, with hands joined and gaze directed upward. The figure is built through a strong contrast between the illuminated areas of the flesh and the dark tones of the background, in a fully 17th-century pictorial language.
On the back of the work there is a handwritten label bearing the following attribution:
"Giovanni Francesco Barbieri known as Guercino 1630–1660"
A second label reads:
"Saint Mary of Egypt – Restored in 1996 – Frame of 1996".
The canvas presents a painted surface with a patina consistent with the stated age and signs of time. On the back a restoration carried out in 1996 is documented.
The work is set in a gilded frame made in 1996, as indicated by the label on the back.
Dimensions of the painting: about 64 × 51 cm
