Oil on canvas landscape titled Auf der Riederalp, dating to 1891, by Leberecht Lortet (1828–1901), unsigned, in excellent condition, 50 by 60 cm, Germany origin, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
For sale is an extraordinary, over 130-year-old art ensemble from the Imperial era, consisting of a moodful alpine oil painting and its original, magnificently preserved opulent frame.
This piece is not an indeterminate attic find, but can be precisely dated and art-historically attributed through historical evidence on the back.
The painting & the motif
Motif: "Auf der Riederalp" (Switzerland). It shows an idyllic alpine mountain panorama with a chapel and a hiking path in the foreground.
Art-historical context: The motif is an exact, absolutely contemporary rendition of the well-known work by the renowned French landscape painter Leberecht Lortet (1828–1901), famous for his precise Alpine depictions. The painting is unsigned, but captivates with a technically solid, masterful execution from the period.
Technique: Oil on canvas, original stretched.
The opulent frame (the absolute highlight)
Type: Authentic Historicism opulent frame made of wood and plaster with gorgeous corner cartouches (Acanthus decor) and a surrounding bead-and-string pattern.
Dimensions: stately 53 x 60 cm (outer dimensions) – enormous depth and regal wall presence.
Historical evidence: On the back there is the original, stamped proof "D.R.G.M. No 14336" (Deutsches Reichs-Gebrauchsmuster) as well as "Ges. Gesch.". Due to the extremely low registration number, the frame (and thus the ensemble) can be precisely dated to the years 1891/1892.
Condition: Very nice, authentic condition with wonderful patina of age. A tiny, age-related plaster detachment at the lower right corner (barely noticeable and underscores the antique character).
Provenance / Origin
On the back there is also a historical, handwritten note from 1960: "Eigentum Margarete Schmitz, Andenken von Neuss, Rheintorstr. 10". The history of the painting has thus been documented for decades in a Rhine-region citizen family.
