Description from the seller
CHANTREAU, Pierre-Nicolas
Philosophical, political and literary journey, made in Russia during the years 1788 and 1789
Paris, Briand, bookseller, 1794. Volume I only.
One volume in octavo format bound in full contemporary marbled calf, spine with raised bands ornamented with gilt lines and fleurs-de-lys, title piece in dark morocco, speckled edges, and boards covered with tinted paper.
The work is illustrated with a large folding map of Russia engraved in 1794.
Written by the citizen Chantreau, this work offers a rich testimony on the manners, the population, religious opinions, prejudices, customs and the political constitution of late 18th-century Russia.
This original Paris edition from 1794 published by Briand is particularly sought after by collectors of travel narratives and historical works on the Russian Empire, especially when it retains its large folded geographic map in good condition.
Solid period binding, showing signs of wear to the headcaps, corners and joints, but preserving an authentic appearance and a well legible decorated spine.
Clean and complete with its superb folding map out of text (“Map of Russia for the Philosophical Voyage 1794”) as well as its half-title and title.
