A French-language, 1919 softback edition of Aujourd’hui. Revue des valeurs nouvelles. Musiques, poëmes, dessins, proses by Claude Autant-Lara and Marcel Vion, is a first edition, limited and numbered issue (426 copies overall, 400 on rag laid paper), with tipped-in plates and illustrations by Kisling, Picasso, Matisse, Dufy, Derain, Lhote and van Dongen, 54 pages, 29 x 23 cm, Paris, in very good condition.
Description from the seller
A rare avant-garde review. Published June 2nd 1919.
Soft Cover in glassine wrap. Edition limited to 426 numbered copies, this one of 400 on rag laid paper - papier torchon (n° 33). Some ff. Slightly browned.
Title in silver letters to front cover. Small tear at the bottom of the top cover, slight loss at the tail of the spine, transfer to the first and last leaf - very faint.
The only issue of this magazine edited by Claude Autant-Lara and Marcel Vion. Texts by Aragon, André Breton, Jean Cocteau, Georges Gabory, Max Jacob, Jules Romains, Jean Le Roy, Marcel L'Herbier, Raymond Radiguet, Pierre Reverdy, Philippe Soupault. Music by Georges Auric and L. Durey.
Illustrated with a beautiful pochoir (hand-stencilled colour) in bright colours by Moïse Kisling, and full page in-text drawings by Picasso, Matisse, Dufy, Derain, Lhote and Kees van Dongen.
[54 (including illustrations)] pp. 29 x 23 cm
It announced itself as quarterly but only this issue ever appeared, on 2 June 1919, just after the Armistice. That’s a time capsule of Paris at the moment Dada and the future Surrealists were gathering.
The editors: Claude Autant-Lara was about eighteen and went on to become a major French film director (Le Diable au corps, La Traversée de Paris). Marcel L’Herbier, another future filmmaker, contributed.
Raymond Radiguet, then sixteen, This is one of his earliest appearances in print. Autant-Lara later filmed Radiguet’s Le Diable au corps (1947).
François Bernouard’s À la Belle Édition was one of the defining small fine presses of the period.
It’s still in its original wrappers with glassine, and the faults are minor. Fragile reviews like this rarely survive in such good shape.
