Nouvelle édition, augmentée de quelques remarques nouvelles.
The important 1732 Paris edition of Rabelais’s works.
6 volumes bound in 5, complete. A new edition. With copperplate title by Scotin showing Rabelais working (in addition to the regular title printed in red and black), engraved portrait (frontis), 3 folding copper plates (La Déviniere, Rabelais' room, the outside of Rabelais' room - they are more interesting than they sound), and 1 engraved map of Chinon and district. Full leather with five raised bands, gilt decoration and titles to burgundy labels to the spines. The bindings are mostly sound, with a touch of wear, particularly to the head and tail of Volume 1 which has slight loss.
Inside, the works are in good, bright condition, with a touch of darkening / foxing to the pages. Slight worm damage (not affecting text) to one volume. Discrete previous owner's stamped ex libris to the verso of the end paper in each volume.
An anonymous Paris revised and enlarged reissue of the 1711 critical edition of Rabelais, written by Le Duchat and La Monnoye. This edition by Pierre-Charles Jamet and Thomas Gueulette, augmented with personal notes and comments.
(Vol I). [3] ff., lii-388 pp., [4] pl. engrav, [1] dep. map; (Vol II). [2] ff., xvi-331 pp.; (Vol III). [2] ff., xxviii-334 pp.; (Vol IV). [2] ff., lxxii-358 pp.; (Vol V). [2] ff., xx-274, [2] ff, 183 pages.
16.5 x 10.5 cm
Rabelais was born at La Devinière, a farmhouse near Chinon in Touraine, a short drive from Richelieu. This edition includes folding plates of La Devinière, of Rabelais’s room inside and out, and a folding map of Chinon and its district.
The map shows the landscape of Gargantua: the great comic war against King Picrochole is fought over real villages around Chinon, Seuilly and Lerné. Rabelais turned a local quarrel over cakes and vines into an epic.
He gave the language a word: gargantuan, and in French pantagruélique.
This 1732 edition reissues Le Duchat’s work with additional notes credited to Pierre-Charles Jamet and Thomas-Simon Gueullette - Notes were important. By 1732 - his language was already dated.
Engraved title by Scotin showing Rabelais at work, an engraved portrait frontispiece, three folding plates and a folding map, and woodcut initials, headpieces and tailpieces.
