Mater Dolorosa, an oil painting on canvas from 17th-century Italy, attributed to the circle of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, depicting the religious subject Mater Dolorosa, 70 x 60 cm, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Description of the lot
An attractive antique oil painting on canvas depicting Mater Dolorosa, the classical iconography of the Virgin Mary with a sword wound in the chest and hands joined in prayer, inspired by the famous subject by the Spanish master Bartolomé Esteban Murillo
The work shows on the back evident signs of age, including some old restoration patches applied in the past to consolidate the original support and repair small defects of the period canvas
The painted layer shows a very tight and deep craquelure with lifts and small losses of color localized especially near the hands and on the face, details that attest to the authenticity and centuries of history of the artifact but that will require a future conservation consolidation intervention
The measurements of the inner battuta on the back are about 70 centimeters high by 59 centimeters wide, a classic domestic devotion format, perfect for enriching Baroque sacred art collections
The lot is sold as is, faithfully documented by numerous close-up photos that show both historical merits and conservation defects of the canvas and the painted surface
