Description from the seller
Title: The Letter
ㅤ
School: European Impressionist School (19th century)
ㅤ
Style: Genre painting in a costumbrista character
ㅤ
Technique: Oil on panel
ㅤ
Status: Condition of conservation in line with its age. It presents restorations.
ㅤ
Circle and artistic influence:
The work is inscribed within 19th-century European genre painting, linked to the costumbrista tradition and interior scenes with narrative character. Its conception especially recalls Central European and French genre painting, where gatherings, conversations and everyday episodes of the bourgeoisie become protagonists. The restrained lighting, the earthy range and ochres and the atmospheric treatment of the interior likewise show a naturalist approach, incorporating a freer brushstroke typical of late 19th-century pictorial trends.
ㅤ
The composition represents an interior scene featuring a group of gentlemen gathered around a small table. The characters, elegantly dressed in frock coats and top hats, seem focused on reading or commenting on a letter or document, creating an intimate, narrative scene. The circular arrangement of the figures guides the eye to the center of the meeting and reinforces the sense of conversation and complicity among the characters.
ㅤ
The interior is built with a sober palette dominated by browns, ochres and earthy tones, with some reddish details on the garments standing out. The furniture, the objects arranged on the tables, and the architectural elements in the background help recreate a period room. The subdued and diffused lighting favors a gathered atmosphere, while the treatment of the figures maintains enough precision to individualize their attitudes and gestures.
ㅤ
The work is presented with a significant era- or historicist-style frame, very wide, made of molded and gilded wood. It features a rich succession of ornamental moldings, vegetal and beaded motifs, combined with an inner cornice in a light tone. The frame shows signs of age, wear, small losses and surface alterations typical of the passage of time.
ㅤ
