Le piante iconografiche e prospettiche di Roma del XVI secolo by Eugenio Rocchi is a 1902 first edition Italian atlas in molto buone condition, comprising 58 loose plates (56 illustrations plus 2 bis) collected in a rigid cloth-bound binder, 96 x 66 cm overall.
Description from the seller
The iconographic and perspectival plans of Rome of the XVI century
Atlas accompanied by 56 plates + 2 duplicate plates (total 58 plates, loose and gathered in a dedicated original soft binding).
Edited by the engineer and military historian Eugenio Rocchi (1850-1933)
Reproduction of topographic, iconographic (plan) and perspectival (bird’s-eye or isometric) views of the city of Rome dating to the sixteenth century. Military architecture is the scientific core of Eugenio Rocchi’s work (often cited as Enrico Rocchi), who approached the study of Rome’s cartography mainly with the eye of a Military Engineering officer and as a historian of fortifications.
The inclusion of Antonio da Sangallo’s studies within the Atlas is no accident: Sangallo was the principal architect commissioned to design the city’s new bastioned defensive system. His studies included the famous Bastion of Sangallo on the Aventine and the fortifications of Borgo and the Vatican.
Original large-format binder in stiff cardboard with title on the front cover and spine and corners in cloth
Dimensions of the different plans, historical elevations and of the binder: 96 x 66 cm - 66 x 48 cm - 48 x 34 cm - some slight signs of wear on the plates
