Antique pair of wooden ice skates from circa 1890–1920, with original leather bindings, metal runners and long fabric ties, marked L and R and originating from the Netherlands, in fair used condition.
Description from the seller
Antique pair of wooden ice skates with original leather bindings, ca. 1890-1920
A particularly distinctive and atmospheric pair of antique wooden skates from around 1890-1920.
The skates are equipped with nicely shaped wooden foot boards, metal blades, leather heel bindings with metal buckles, and long woven securing straps. The specimens are stamped with an “L” and an “R,” presumably indicating the left- and right-skates.
Above all, the completeness makes this pair attractive. The old leather bindings, buckles and long straps are still present and form a beautiful authentic whole, with wood, metal, leather and textile having developed a characterful patina over the years.
The skates are in their original used condition and show signs of aging, including wear and darkening of the wood, oxidation on the metal parts, and wear and aging of leather and textile. These signs are consistent with the probable age and are clearly visible in the photos.
An appealing collectible for enthusiasts of historical skates, winter sports and vintage utilitarian objects. Due to their shape and patina, they also make a handsome decorative pair.
Period: ca. 1890-1920
Origin: Netherlands
Material: wood, iron, leather and textile
Quantity: 2, one cohesive pair
Condition: authentic used state with signs of aging and wear
