Description from the seller

Decorative heraldic coat of arms shield – relief in metal on dark velvet – European character

Particularly distinctive and richly crafted heraldic wall object with a three-dimensional shield, mounted on a dark brown velvet-covered plate with a gilded edge. The combination of the dark background and the silver- and gold-colored metal parts gives the whole a stately, almost museum-like appearance.

At the center is a classic heraldic shield: on the shield an eagle with spread wings is depicted, with two stars above it. The shield is surrounded by elaborately formed mantling and crowned by a helmet, above which again a bird serves as the helmet badge. The various components are applied separately, creating a beautiful layered relief.

This construction follows traditional European heraldry. The High Council of Nobility describes the shield as the most important part of a coat of arms, to which, among other things, a helmet, mantling and a helmet badge can be added. Heraldry originated in the Middle Ages as a recognition system for persons and families.

Comparable decorative shields on wooden or velvet-covered wall panels were mainly produced during the 20th century as interior and heraldic decoration. For pieces without a maker’s mark, the exact manufacturer or family origin is often not reliably identifiable.

This piece has therefore intentionally not assigned a specific family or noble origin. The eagle and star motif used occurs in various European heraldic traditions and is in itself insufficient for certain identification.

An attractive object for heraldry enthusiasts, historical interiors, curiosities and classic wall decoration. Especially the openwork metal ornaments and the contrast with the dark velvet make this a striking decorative piece.
