About the artist:

Antonio Saura, born 1930 in Huesca/Spain, began drawing and writing as a self-taught artist as early as 1943. In 1953 he moved to Paris and became a member of the Surrealist group. In 1958 he participated in the Venice Biennale and in 1959 in Documenta II in Kassel, and in the same year was exhibited with Antoni Tàpies at the van de Loo Gallery in Munich. In 1960 he received the Guggenheim Prize in New York, where a year later he exhibited at the Galerie Pierre Matisse. In addition to satirical works on paper, the first etchings and screenprints emerged. After retrospectives at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, in 1964 he, together with Chillida and Soulages, received the Carnegie Prize. From 1967 he worked in winter in Paris and in summer in Cuenca/Spain, whereby for 10 years he gave up painting on canvas in favor of work on paper. In 1975 the Maeght Gallery in Barcelona presented a retrospective of works on paper, in 1977 he participated in Documenta VI in Kassel. In 1979 retrospectives followed with over 300 works on paper, including at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, the Kunsthalle of Düsseldorf and the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona. In 1994 the Museum of Modern Art in Lugano showed the painting from 1948-1990; four years later Antonio Saura died in Cuenca.

Works by Antonio Saura include, among others, the Museum of Modern Art/New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou/Paris, the Stedelijk Museum/Amsterdam, the Tate Gallery/London, the National Gallery Berlin, the Museum for 20th Century Art of Vienna, and the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia/Madrid.
