Plant table - Bamboo, rattan, Wood

Antique rattan/bamboo plant stand – jardinière / pedestal – curved frame – first half of the 20th century

A particularly decorative and elegantly built tall plant stand, executed in darkly finished rattan/bamboo. The slender silhouette, the gracefully curved connections, and the crossed construction at the bottom give this piece of furniture a pronounced character.

This type of light, natural furniture aligns with the popularity of bamboo and rattan furniture from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when exotic materials and East Asia-inspired designs found a firm place in European interiors. Similar old bamboo plant stands and étagères are today described, among other terms, as Victorian, Anglo-Japanese and early 20th‑century decorative furniture.

The table features a rectangular top with rounded corners and a second lower shelf beneath it. The four legs flare slightly outward and are connected by gracefully curved braces. The especially cross-shaped underframe with the curved side pieces gives the piece its graceful appearance.

The dark finish beautifully reveals the natural texture of the material. Because of its tall, narrow form, this table is ideally suited as a plant stand, jardinière, pedestal for a vase, sculpture or ceramics, but also as a decorative occasional table.

Condition

The plant stand is in used antique/vintage condition with a nicely lived-in look. There are scattered age- and wear-related traces, including finish wear, minor damage, discolorations and edge/connection marks.

This patina precisely emphasizes the authentic character of the piece. The construction and various joints are clearly shown in the photos.

A atmospheric and increasingly hard-to-find piece that fits beautifully within a classical, botanical, bohemian, colonial, Japandi or eclectic interior.
