who owns England's abbeys?
More than 150 years after Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries, thousands of English families still owned what was Church land. The book takes up a question that worried them: if Catholicism came back, would the Church take that land back?
In 1687 this was a real fear. England had a Catholic king, James II, who was promoting Catholics
The author and printer were both Catholic loyalists, who were trying to reassure the public that the lands would stay with them. It all became irrelevant. Within a year the King had fled.
Following a pamphlet by Sir William Coventry, Johnston published this work, which aimed to demonstrate that even if the Religious Orders were restored in England, the possessors of the church lands confiscated by Henry VIII could not be disturbed.
