Description from the seller
Expressive, semi-abstract landscape by Alexandre Garbell, a Riga-born painter of the École de Paris. With thick impasto in warm red, orange, turquoise and deep green-black, he evokes an evening along the Mediterranean Sea near Cannes, with palm trees, pines and hills. A typical work from the postwar Nouvelle École de Paris, on the boundary of figuration and lyrical abstraction.
• Bottom-right signed "Garbell"
• On the back written in pencil: "Soir à Cannes", "Garbell" and "[Ge]nève 1963"
• Christie's sticker with handwritten initials on the back
• Further inventory numbers on the back: "8002 MA", "8002", "11"
• Oil on wooden panel
• In a wooden frame with gilded edge and a linen-like inner frame
