Antonio Frizzi’s Album Estense a corredo della Storia di Ferrara / Album della Maison D'Este, 1st edition published in 1850, in folio with 179 pages, Italian text with a facing French text, a hardbound grey cloth binding with gold titles, and numerous steel-engraved plates (some hand-coloured) depicting Ferrara monuments, in good condition overall.
Description from the seller
Ferrara, Abramo Servadio Editor, 1850. In folio, antip. incisa in acciaio (“Porta di Schifanoja”), frontispiece with a small engraved vignette, pp. 175 + 4 of Indices, text in Italian and French on facing pages, within a frame; many are the plates, the majority engraved in steel in black and white and some others in lithography (Fratelli Doyen) depicting monuments and places of interest of the city (the Castle, the Cathedral, the Cemetery and the University of Ferrara); the plates representing Borso and Leonello d’Este are finely hand-colored in fine contemporary coloring; those of the other lords of the city, together with those of Tasso and Ariosto, are unsewn. Contemporary binding in gray cloth with small gold-tooled titles on the plate (“Souvenir of Ferrara which L. A. T. offers to Anna Hersche on May 1, 1861”), blind-stamped borders on covers, and guard sheets in pink molded paper. Important textual compilation enriched by the plates. Signs and wear from use to the binding, copy slightly yellowed (greater yellowing on some pages), sporadic foxing on some pages, the plates are detached and slightly trimmed but still with ample margins, overall in more than decent state of preservation.
